At Susitna Animal Urgent Care, we follow a thorough surgical process to ensure safety, transparency, and the best possible outcome for your pet.

Step 1:
Pre-Surgical Evaluation

Every pet undergoes a physical examination, along with bloodwork or imaging as needed, to assess surgical risk and ensure a safe procedure.

We discuss the prognosis, treatment plan, and cost estimates with you beforehand to set clear expectations.

Step 2:
Procedure & Recovery

Your pet’s procedure is performed with expert surgical care and continuous monitoring by our licensed vet technicians.

Post-operative instructions are provided, including guidelines for home care, activity restrictions, and medication schedules.

If needed, cones or protective layers will be applied before discharge to aid healing.

Step 3:
Continuing Care & Transfers

If your pet requires ongoing medical care after surgery, we will coordinate a transfer to a 24-hour care facility. While you are responsible for transporting your pet, we ensure a seamless transition by:

  • Sending complete medical records and test results ahead of your arrival.
  • Speaking directly with the receiving doctor to relay case details and estimated arrival time.

Surgical FAQs

Surgery is a valuable tool in veterinary medicine, but it should only be considered when medically necessary. The determination of necessity and the appropriate timing is typically made during a consultation with your veterinarian to ensure the safest course of action for your pet’s well-being. If you suspect your pet may require urgent surgical intervention, it is crucial to bring them to the veterinary clinic promptly for evaluation or contact your primary care team to discuss the situation and receive further guidance.

If the surgery is not emergent and a more specialized procedure we will provide instructions at an initial evaluation including fasting overnight, which medications to give and when. This is not always possible when the surgical need is urgent or emergent, do not delay having your pet seen to withhold food.

The length of a procedure varies greatly depending on the surgery. The surgery itself may vary between 15 minutes and several hours but with every surgery expect several hours to include diagnostics and safe preparation procedures as well as recovery time after to be sure your pet is fully awake and it is safe for them to be sent home or transfer.

Post-op care will also vary greatly depending on the surgery and include weeks to months of confinement and rest to allow proper healing. Any incision or bandaging will need to be carefully monitored for signs of infection or other complication. Diet recommendations may be made depending on why the surgery was performed and medications will be sent home. Orthopedic procedures will generally have a longer recovery time and involve follow-up radiographs to evaluate bone healing. Any splints or bandages will likely need to be changed at regular intervals. All of these instructions will be discussed with the family at the time of the procedure and any home care instructions provided in writing.

If your pet requires continued care overnight we will organize a transfer to a 24 hour care facility. We will contact the facility in advance to prepare them for your arrival, transferring your pets complete record including all diagnostic results and any pertinent information will be conveyed to the care team. You will pick up your pet once they are safely recovered and take them directly to the 24 hour facility who will be expecting you for a direct transfer which usually means minimal waiting and your pet being taken back to the treatment area right away to continue necessary care measures.

Not all pets are capable of or inclined to take oral medications. We offer a myriad of pain management options for all surgery patients depending on anticipated pain associated with the procedure. These options include:

  1. Oral pain medication and anti-inflammatories (pill and liquid forms)
  2. Injectable medications (both short and long acting)
  3. Topical long-acting pain medications
  4. Nerve and local tissue numbing agents of varied duration
  5. Cold laser therapy
